Even so only one in 10 girls as opposed to one in four boys would talk to a knowledgeable teacher about sex. In fact they would be just as likely to turn to the agony aunt pages of a magazine. Surprisingly more than half the girls even though they were aware of their right to confidentiality would be to embarrassed to talk to a doctor about sex or contraception. Just last week a survey by Brook Advisory Centres revealed an estimated 84,000 15 year old girls are sexually active, yet just 18,000 of them go to a family planning clinic. And they while they reckon condoms, by far the most popular form of contraception for teenagers, are sensible they are victims of their own self-consciousness because they are too afraid to buy them. Eight out of 10 agreed it was OK for girls to carry condoms but half said they would be too embarrassed to buy them. When it comes to asking parents' advice, tensions of previous generations have eased considerably.
